Leopard seal – day 2

 

New day and a new landing at Cuverville Island with penguins everywhere and a strong penguin smell. There were chicks still with their mother so the penguin people did some counting and we counted seals. Had another amazing encounter with a Leopard seal first chasing a penguin and then killing it in front of us in the zodiac. All the impressions you get down here is a little too much, we don't have much time to reflect over what we are doing and the things we are seeing so I am glad we are writing blogs because then I can remember where I have been and what we have done. After the Leopard seal encounter we went cruising for icebergs and it was really cooooool. In the afternoon we had another landing at 'Admeralte' Brown station an Argentinean summer station. We were cruising with Sonja the marine mammal lecturer on board so we went and looked for seals and there were crabeater seals all around the ice flakes, we also had a nice hike up a mountain were we sat in still for five minutes to just enjoy the view and the sounds of Antarctica which was really nice. The sun has been warming us today too, Antarctica is amazing!!!! That's all I can say after the sealalichous day we had. En ny dag i det Antarktise paradise. Det va tåke i morrest, men det stoppa ikke sola for å bryte igjennom for å gi oss varme og nydelig vær. Vi har I dag vært innom Cuverville island som hold en øy full av pingviner og en kraftig aroma fra de og. Det e jo litt av sjarmen. Etter å ha besøkt øya, ligg leopard selen å venter på oss med en pingvin I munnen for å vise oss kordan man spis den. Helt fantastiske dyr. All inntrykk man får her nede e veldig overveldende, vi har nesten ikke tid til å tenke over dagen før en ny dag starter så det kommer til å bli mye tid når æ kommer hjem til å tenke over ka æ har opplevd. På ettermiddagen besøkte vi 'admerante' brown stasjon som e en Argentisk sommer stasjon. Vi fikk en fin tur rundt område med zodiacs og fikk en fjelltur til en topp på øya og der vi fikk skli på rompa ned. Artig! Det va også crabeater sel I området og vi hadde med oss sjøpattedyr foreleseren så vi dro å så på de. En perfekt avsluttning på dagen va grillmat når vi kom hjem til båten. Day two/three in Antarctica and the weather is treating us well. The sun is out and some fog in the air and some wind. We had our first landing this morning at Brown Bluff which is part of the Antarctic continent. The beach was full of fur seals and Gentoo and Adelé penguins together with two Weddell seals, ah what an amazing wildlife experience. We did seal and penguin counting to see how many were at the beach. The seals didn't care too much about us, but if you came to close they would let you know. Two Weddell seals were lying on the beach resting when we came and they only woke up to look at us and then fell back to sleep. In the afternoon we had a zodiac trip around Gourdian Island. The weather had changed and the fog was lying down on the island looking mysterious and when we came closer to the island we saw penguins swimming around us full panicked and there it was, a Leopard seal swimming around the boat!!! He came up towards us to check us out, found out we were not edible and focused on the penguins again. This is one of the highlights of my life, because he swam next to the boat and we got to see the size of his body. We are steaming further south now on the west side of the peninsula. Silje

 

 

 

Andre hele dag I Antarktis og været holde sæ enda bra. Sola skinner og det e litt tåke i lufta og noe vind. I dag hadde vi vår første landing på det Antarktike kontinentet på brown bluff, I går va vi på ei øy. Stranda på øya va full av pelsel og pinviner, det var også to weddell seler som lå å hvilte sæ. Vi telte seler og pinviner for å estimere kor mange som hold til der. Selene brydde sæ ikke så mye om oss, men sa godt I fra om vi kom for nært dem, da ga dem ut ett skikkelig brøl. Vi fikk oss også en ettermiddagstur rundt Gourdian Island der flere hundre kanskje tusner pingviner holdt til. Det va ganske mye tåke rundt plassen så det så ganske mystisk ut der. Da vi kom mot øya så vi ganske mange pingviner svømme rundt i vannet på flykt fra den kjente leopard selen. Han kom opp rett ved båten og så på oss, fant ut han ikke kunne spise oss og fortsatte jakten på pingvinene. Det va ett av mine personlige høydepunkt I mitt liv da seler alltid har fasinert mæ og her e æ I Antarktis der leopard seler jakter på seler og her e æ I en båt og observere deres naturlige adferd og e lykkelig. Entering the Antarctic Penninsula

We have survived the Drake Passage and are now sailing through the Antarctic Penninsula. On our way down I have spent lots of time on deck looking for marine mammals and birds. We have seen several species today: Bottlenose whale, Finwhale, storm petrel together with the other seabirds I saw yesterday and the most excited animal was the beautiful FUR SEAAAAAL. We had several swimming around the boat looking at us and wondering who we were. We reached the peninsula during dinner around 19.30 and the sun was out together with some funky clouds surrounding King George Island. A few icebergs were floating around so the peninsula welcomed us with a nice image. It is windy out today and we have been planning on having a late landing, but we will continue to James Ross Island and try to land at Snowhill tomorrow – that will be so amazing if we get to do that since one of the lectures on board Olle Karlson told us a story about Nordenskjold and Larsen and their story from Antarctica. The students are very excited and people are just wearing a big smile on their face because their lifes are about to change. Protect the poles. Protect the planet.

Den Antarktise peninsula

Vi har overlevd Drake passasjen med godt humør og fint vær og nu har vi endelig kommet til peninsulaen I Antarktis som e tuppen som stikk opp fra kontinentet. På veien ned har æ tilbringt mye tid på dekk for å se etter sjøpattedyr og vi har endelig sett en god del liv I vannet. Forskjellige typa fugal har vi sett I dag sammen med hvaler blant annet Finhval som e den nest største hvalen I verden og det nest største pattedyret I verden. Mest spennanes va det å se de Antarktise pelselene som hoppet I bølgene. Føle mæ så utrulig heldig som e her nede I Antarktis og får oppleve all denne fantastiske naturen sammen med en så fantastisk artig og engasjert gjeng med menneska. Under middag kom vi til peninsulaen og så land for første gang på to daga sammen med isfjell, øya vi først så heter King George og nu drar vi lengre sør for å komme til James Ross øy og skal prøve å dra inn til Snowhill. Håpe på fint vær så vi får komme oss på land, det e jo en veldig spesiell plass. Olle Karlson en av foreleserne ombord fortalte oss en utrulig historie om Nordenskjold og Larsen fra Antarktis og hytta deres skal ennå være der. Studentene e veldig gira og glæde sæ til å oppleve å se mer av Antarktis og livene deres e på tur til å forandres alt på grunn av studenter på is. Beskytt polene. Beskytt planeten.

Out on the ocean

Today is the day we are heading out on the ocean. We started out the day with a hike to lagune Esmeralda at Tierra del Fuego. The hike was really amazing, there were big swamps we had to cross. The weather was really nice with the sun shining the way for us. At Esmeralda some of the students jumped in the water to take a dip at glacial water. Too cold for me today, so I am waiting to take a dip at Deception Island. After the fantastic hike we boarded MV Ushuaia and set sail to Antarctica. The boat is really nice and so is the crew onboard. Now we are in the famous Beagle channel and at midnight we will be at the Drake Passage crossing to Antarctica.

I dag e dagen vi drar ut på havet på vei til Antarktis. Endelig e dagen her. Dagen starta med sol og fint vær og en tur til lagune Esmeralda som e ett område med isbre vann, en lagune. Noen av studentene bestemte sæ for å ta en dupp for å kjenne på temperaturen. Modig! Æ vente til Deception Island for å ta min Antarktise svømmetur. Etter den flotte turen vår dro vi om bord MV Ushuaia. Båten e kjempefin og så e mannskapet. Nu seiler vi gjennom Beagle kanalen og den skumle drake passage vente på oss rundt midnatt.

First real day of Students on Ice University Expedition 2011

....Two new things about my blog.

Today I had the first real day with all the students and staff. We had a nice morning with early breakfast, but the hotel could not fit us all in the dining hall so some of us had to sit outside in the hallway with spoons as knifes and cups as glasses. :-) Feeling like a real student again, and that feeling is good.

After the interesting breakfast we had a meeting outside as the weather was nice, and we had a nice introduction to the Antarctic ecosystem lead by our educational teacher Tim.
The rest of the day was spent inside with the students and educational teachers . We had some nice lectures about the Antarctic ecosystem.

I also had dinner with the marine mammal crew from Scotland to talk about the trip.
The rest of the night was spent trying to get my blog to work, so I will write a longer blog tomorrow.

I dag e den første ordentlige dagen med gjengen fra studenter på is (SOI), fantastisk gjeng som æ skal tilbringe de neste ukene sammen med i Antarktis. Vi fikk en tidlig telefon i morrest der vi måtte stå opp klokka syv for å være klar til halv ni for møter. Frokosten klarte hotellet fint å levere med at vi måtte sitte i gangen med skjeer som kniver og kopper som glass. Følte mæ som en student igjen og det va en fin følelse.

Etter frokost dro vi ut i bakgården og fikk en fin introduksjon til den Antarktiske næringskjeden fra utdannings koordinatoren vår Tim. Resten av dagen tilbringte vi sammen med resten av forskerne for å snakke om hvor vi skal. Brukte også mye tid på å ordne klar bloggen min så æ kan poste oppdateringer hver dag. Følg med!!!!
